5am Studios’ New Modular Acoustics System
Welcome to the first news post on 5am’s new Website! We’ll keep you posted on who’s working in the studio, new gear, recording tips and more.
Les and I have just finished installing the modular acoustics system in the 5am tracking room. One of the things our client love the most about the studio is the sound of our 4,500 cubic foot live room. It’s pretty awesome for rock drums (just ask Grammy-winning drummer Ernie Durawa or Justin Furstenfeld of the platinum-selling Blue October), big ambient electric guitars, and other applications where a real space beats reverb-in-a-box (though we have some amazing digital reverbs in our racks like the Bricasti M7 and tc electronic M4000). But we wanted to be able to tune the room’s decay to suit the session, so I devised a system of rails on which we could hang absorptive panels (like those in the control room). With 20 2’x4’ panels available, we can pretty much go from totally live to pretty dead and everything in between. And the panels can double as gobos so we can isolate instruments when tracking simultaneously.
We have also added diffusers to the back wall and ceiling of the tracking room to tighten up the response and eliminate flutter echoes. It looks pretty cool, too! So come by and check out all the improvements we’ve made.
